Electrical Diagnostics

We use top of the line test equipment to troubleshoot electrical issues. The check engine light could mean a costly problem like a bad catalytic converter, or it could be something minor, like a loose gas cap.

Electrical Diagnostics and Check Engine Light Codes

When you have a problem that is electrical in nature, take it to someone who specializes in electrical systems. You won’t hurt your mechanic’s feelings if you go to a specialist, since mechanics don’t like working on electrical problems because it takes all of their time and energy to stay up to date on the electrical problems in a vehicle.

Audioman is Dealer-level Facility. We have the vehicle Computers that are normally found only at your new-car dealership. What does this mean to you? It means we can dig deeper into your computer system than a normal mechanical repair shop that uses a scan tool. We can find and fix problems that are software-related – something that only a dealer could perform previously. We don’t guess at problems and point fingers, but rather find the problem and solve it.

Buying and maintaining these computers is a huge investment for us, but is the only way to work on your electrical system properly. Our team can make programming changes to your vehicle that seemed impossible in the past.​

A check engine light or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is a tell-tale that a computerized engine-management system uses to indicate a malfunction. The light is found on the instrument panel of most automobiles. It usually bears the legend check engine, service engine soon, or a pictogram of an engine, and when illuminated it is typically either an amber or red color.

The light generally has two stages: steady (indicating a minor fault) and flashing (indicating a severe fault). When the MIL is lit, the engine control unit stores a fault code related to the malfunction. This can be retrieved with a "scan tool"

NEW YORK STATE VEHICLE INSPECTION SERVICES

As part of our test, a certified inspector will carefully check the following components to ensure they meet New York state safety standards:

Seat belts:

  • We’ll inspect for proper operation and anchorage

  • We’ll make sure your car has the number of seat belts required for its model and year

  • We’ll check your vehicle's air-bag warning lamp for proper operation.

 

Brakes:

At least one front wheel must be removed to inspect the following braking components:

  • Brake pedal reserve and fade

  • Power brake unit

  • Brake master cylinder

  • Disc brake pads

  • Brake drums and/or rotors

  • Wheel cylinders and/or calipers

  • All brake lines and hoses

  • Parking brake

  • Brake equalization

 

Steering

Front end, suspension, chassis, frame, and wheel fasteners:

  • Front end assembly

  • Steering wheel play

  • All steering linkages

  • Power steering

  • Springs and torsion bars

  • Chassis/frame

  • Wheel fasteners 

 

Tires (excluding spares):

  • Tread depth

  • Tire condition

  • Tire pressure

 

Lights:

  • Headlamps (low and high beam)

  • Tail lamps

  • Stop lamps

  • Directional signals

  • Backup lights (1969 and newer)

  • License plate lights

  • Hazard warning/four-way flasher (1966 and newer)

  • Directional signal indicator

Note: All lighting must be of an approved type and inspected for operation, proper mounting, and broken or missing lenses.

 

Windshield and other glass:

  • No crack of 11 inches long or longer

  • Windshield check for presence and condition

  • Window check for approved safety glass or rigid plastic and condition

 

Windshield wipers and blades (not including rear window or headlamp wipers):

  • Wipers check for presence and operation

  • Blades check for good condition

 

Horn:

  • Check mounting and operation

 

Mirrors:

  • Check mirror locations for proper mounting, cracks, breaks, and/or discoloration.

  • We’ll make sure your car has the number and placement of mirrors required for its model and year

Note: Any vehicle that has a permanent obstruction of the view through the rear window must have both a left and a right outside mirror.

Fuel leaks:

  • Any fuel leak that causes dripping or pooling is not acceptable.

 

Vehicles are required to be inspected prior to midnight on the last day of the month punched, of the indicated year, on the current inspection certificate. Upon the casual (non-dealer) sale or transfer of a motor vehicle, any certificate of inspection issued prior to the date of the sale or transfer will be deemed invalid. Every motor vehicle and trailer must be inspected upon change of registrant.

 

All vehicles registered in New York State must get a safety inspection and an emissions inspection every 12 months.

Both inspections are also required when the ownership of a vehicle is transferred.
